Hundreds of adult homes conceal abuse, neglect

Audree Hopkins, who underwent numerous surgeries after being burned by a fireball from her oxygen pump, is helped back to her nursing-home room by former husband Larry, who visits her at least five days a week. The state had waived the insurance requirement for the adult home where Hopkins was injured. That ruled out a lawsuit to recover her crushing medical expenses; the couple had to divorce so that Audree could go on Medicaid and Larry, on a Boeing pension, could keep his home.
