With a view from beyond the moon, an astronaut talks religion, politics and possibilities

Lovell, Borman and Anders, left to right, share a laugh in a technical briefing before the launch of Apollo 8. Borman was the mission commander. Anders, trained as a lunar module pilot, served as a de facto backup commander on a mission hastily re-purposed to abandon lunar module testing in Earth orbit and fly instead all the way to the moon - a bold gambit to reach lunar orbit before the Soviet Union.
