In 1963, just as today, most of Everest's climbs began with a harrowing passage through the Khumbu Icefall. One of the 1963 expedition's youngest climbers, Jake Breitenbach, 27, died here in an ice avalanche on the second day of the climb. He remains entombed on Everest.
