Buzz off: Creative new mosquito repellents are coming, scientists say

Research on Anopheles gambiae, which transmits malaria, led to insights on how female mosquitoes sniff out victims. The heavy structure in the middle is the proboscis, which contains bloodsucking machinery. The sense of smell is in the maxillary palp, the other long, hairy structure.
