‘Downton’ fashions: refined to frivolous in 1922

Season 4 begins in 1922, “pre-flapper,” said McCall, “but we’re starting to see that very straight silhouette, with longer skirts.” Still, hemlines are shorter than in the earlier seasons of “Downton Abbey,” when Edwardian-styled dresses and skirts fell to the floor. Though Cora, played by Elizabeth McGovern, dresses in a more staid manner than her daughters, she nonetheless keeps up with fashion. She knows what suits her and sticks to it, and always looks impeccably turned out,” said McCall. Her refined look is “what she’s trained herself to be over time: to be the Countess of Grantham.”
