‘Downton’ fashions: refined to frivolous in 1922

“She’s very much an Edwardian lady,” McCall said of Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), noting that Violet’s costumes were inspired by Queen Alexandra (1844-1925), who was about her age. “Queen Alexandra always stuck to the same silhouette from the late 1800s, and that’s what Violet has done: a high neck collar, waisted dresses,” said McCall. Violet’s look is in sharp contrast to that of her contemporary, Martha Levinson. “I thought that was really nice together, with them so different.”
