‘Downton’ fashions: refined to frivolous in 1922

For much of this season, Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery, center, with Tom Cullen and Samantha Bond) wears the colors of half-mourning: grays, lavenders, purples. Despite the limited palettes, Mary’s clothes are fashionably cut, with many looks this season inspired by the French designer Madeleine Vionnet (1876-1975). “(Mary and Matthew) went to France on their honeymoon, and I thought it would be interesting if they’d gone to Paris and gone to the couturiers,” McCall said.
