‘Downton’ fashions: refined to frivolous in 1922

The Crawleys’ young cousin Rose, played by Lily James, joined the cast as a regular this season, giving McCall a chance to dress a very young woman who “wears things that the others wouldn’t be seen in.” She’s been dressed this season in knitwear (just starting to be generally worn out and about in the early 1920s), pajamas and skirts with a dramatic, fuller silhouette. “She’s young, but very different from Sybil (Mary and Edith’s late younger sister) in her attitude,” said McCall, who enjoys creating for a character who is “more frivolous in her approach to dress.”
