Patrick Takoko, a Maori from Gisborne, New Zealand, gets some helping hands putting on a piupiu, a traditional garment woven from harakeke leaves. His shoulder and back are adorned with Maori tattoos (he’s in the photograph in the background at right). The Exhibit, “Toi Maori: The Eternal Threat,” was at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in 2006. Christchurch, New Zealand, has been a Seattle sister city since 1981.
