With a camera, Matika Wilbur aims to bring Indian history to the here and now

Photographer Matika Wilbur has been granted rare access to the Native American communities she’s visited. This portrait shows a “crown dancer,” thought to be able to summon mountain spirits and ward off evil and disease, from the White Mountain Apache people of Arizona and New Mexico.
