Newport's math tournament is a fundraiser, too

Posted by Katherine Long

How's this for smart: Newport High's math club needs to raise money for entry fees for upcoming math competitions. So they're holding a math competition themselves -- for younger students, in grades five through eight, this Saturday.

The Knights of Pi Math Tournament has become an annual fund-raiser for the club, and it's quite a bit of work, said club advisor Jake Nonis.

"The students in our math club first spend several months brainstorming ideas and writing questions," said Nonis in an e-mail. "Then we undergo a review process where other students, math teachers, and math experts review the problems for clarity and accuracy of the answer key. We try to include questions spanning a range of difficulties on each test so that experienced competitors will be challenged while newer competitors will be encouraged."

Newport's math team competes in math competitions around the region, routinely pulling in top honors. You can find out more about them on their Web page. The club is hoping to get a few more schools to sign up for the competition; the registration fee is $48 for a team of four.
