New releases

“Gay Seattle: Stories of Exile and Belonging by Gary L. Atkins (University of Washington Press, $19.95). Atkins, a Seattle University associate professor of communications, traces the evolution of Seattle’s gay and lesbian community, starting with an 1893 law that made homosexuality a crime.

“Helen of Troy: Beauty, Myth, Devastation” by Ruby Blondell (Oxford University Press, $29.95). University of Washington classics professor Blondell explores the paradoxes and ambiguities surrounding the story of Helen, an enduring myth about the destructive power of beauty.

“The Originals” by Cat Patric (Little, Brown and Company, $18). The Seattle-area author’s third book focuses on the Best family, on the surface a single mother and 17-year-old daughter. But there are three daughters. Are they identical triplets — or something else?

“Be Brave, Tah-hy!: The Journey of Chief Joseph’s Daughter” by Jack R. Williams (Washington State University Press, $29.95). The grueling forced trek of the Nez Perce from their Inland Northwest homeland to the Canadian border is seen through the eyes of Chief Joseph’s daughter, 12-year-old Tah-hy. Native American artist Jo Preferes illustrates the narrative, which is intended for young adults.
