China Southern Airlines, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, will get 13 Boeing 787 airliners as part of a $7.2 billion Chinese order from the Chicago-based company announced last week.
China Southern, based in the southern provincial city of Guangzhou, signed an initial agreement for the aircraft, including three 787s for affiliate Xiamen Airlines, China Southern said in a statement to the Shanghai stock exchange today.
China Southern said it will negotiate purchase details.
China Eastern Airlines, the nation's third-largest carrier, said in a separate statement that the airline will get 15 Boeing 787s, formerly known as the 7E7.
Hainan Airlines, whose biggest shareholder is U.S. financier George Soros, will get eight 787s, according to a statement to the stock exchange.
China Aviation Supplies Import & Export Group Corp., a state-owned company in charge of purchases for the country's airlines, said Friday it would buy 60 Boeing 7E7s, to be allocated to six Chinese carriers, including Air China and Shanghai Airlines.
Boeing said Friday it was changing the name of the new airliner from 7E7 to 787, continuing the 7-series model and recognizing that in China the number 8 is consider good luck.
