Among the earnings stories for Tuesday, May 4, from AP Financial News:

- Power company Duke Energy said its first-quarter earnings jumped 29 percent as improving industrial demand and a cold winter boosted electricity sales.

- Ameristar Casinos Inc. first-quarter profit fell 64 percent as one of its casinos wrestled with new competition and a permanent bridge closing at another made access difficult.

- FirstEnergy said its first-quarter profit rose 30 percent as improving demand for electricity from industrial customers offset weaker sales to commercial and residential customers.

- DineEquity Inc., parent company of Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar and IHOP Restaurants, said its first-quarter profit slid on higher expenses and a smaller debt extinguishment gain, but adjusted results beat Wall Street expectations.

- Casino operator Boyd Gaming Corp. said it returned to a first-quarter profit as cost cuts helped offset a drop in gambling revenue and forecast growth in the second half of the year.
