Saga Communications posts 1Q profit of $3.3M

Radio station operator Saga Communications Inc. posted a first-quarter profit Tuesday, helped by lower expenses at its stations and climbing revenue.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. —

Radio station operator Saga Communications Inc. posted a first-quarter profit Tuesday, helped by lower expenses at its stations and climbing revenue.

The company earned $3.3 million, or 78 cents per share, compared with a loss of $362,000, or 9 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Operating expenses at the company's stations were down 6 percent to $22.6 million, while revenue climbed 7 percent to $28 million.

The company's stock jumped $1.02, or 4.2 percent, to $25.12 in afternoon trading.
