Action-sports clothing and equipment retailer Zumiez said Wednesday its sales improved in April, and a key sales measurement surpass Wall Street expectations.

The Lynnwood company said its total sales grew 12 percent to $43 million over the four weeks ended May 4.

Sales at stores open at least a year rose 4.6 percent. Those sales are considered an important measurement of retailer performance because they exclude results from stores that opened or closed in the last year.

Thomson Reuters says analysts expected growth of 3.3 percent at stores open at least a year.
