Amazon debuts payment service to rival PayPal
The online retail giant launches Login and Pay with Amazon, hoping to persuade Web merchants to use its payment technology to complete transactions.

Amazon rolled out a new payment service Tuesday that will compete with rival eBay’s widely used PayPal.
The new service, Login and Pay with Amazon, lets shoppers quickly pay for items at participating non-Amazon sites using their Amazon credentials to access their payment and shipping information. Instead of filling in credit card and address information for each purchase, shoppers at sites that use the service simply click on a “Pay with Amazon” button and have the information automatically transmitted to the retailer.
Amazon charges merchants 2.9 percent of each sale, plus 30 cents for transactions of $10 or more.
The company is hoping its more than 215 million active customer accounts will lure merchants, who in many instances compete with the online retail giant. Some of the service’s first customers are in-flight Internet provider Gogo and home improvement products retailer Build.com.
