Format, special guests set for next week

Posted by Bob Payne

"American Idol" has announced the format for the Top 3 next week: Each contestant will sing two songs - judges' choice and finalist's choice.

In previous seasons they sang three songs for the Top 3 show with one of them being the choice of show producer Clive Davis. Wonder why that's not in the mix this season? Do you suppose they're worried because they frequently go over on time? (Note that the official runtime for next Tuesday's show is 8:00-9:04 PM.)

And for once I hope the judges pick songs that are from within the last 10 years. I've had enough of them singing 40-year-old songs.

Here's the lineup for the results show on Wednesday:

  • Katy Perry will perform "Waking up in Vegas," the newest single from her debut album, "One of the Boys."

  • Season 5 winner Jordin Sparks returns to the Idol stage to perform her new single, "Battlefield."
