Apple Cup 2-minute drill
Washington State rallied to beat Washington, 31-28 in overtime Friday in Pullman.
Player of the game
Jeff Tuel, likely playing his last game at Washington State and with a troublesome knee he tweaked on the last play of the first half, completed 33 of 53 passes for 350 yards. His two interceptions came after bobbles by WSU receivers.
Play of the game
With WSU trailing 28-17 and nine minutes remaining, Tuel evaded a stiff pass rush, almost went to the ground but recovered to throw a 29-yard pass to Isiah Myers, and Andrew Hudson's roughing-the-passer penalty added another 9 yards to move the ball to the UW 9-yard line. Four plays later, WSU scored and added a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 28-25.
Following the touchdown that cut the Washington lead to 28-17, the Huskies began a series with 10:41 left. On third down, WSU defensive tackle Steven Hoffart penetrated and forced a fumble by quarterback Keith Price.
Stat of the game
The Huskies had a school-record-tying 18 penalties for 129 yards.
By the numbers
2 Sacks by WSU's Ioane Gauta, who frequently had his way with the UW offensive line.
3 WSU's third-quarter turnovers, helping stake the Huskies to a 28-10 lead.
3.2 Bishop Sankey's yards-per-rush for the Huskies, with a long of 9, in his first game at the school where he initially committed.
4 Apple Cups that have gone to overtime — all in Pullman — since the rule was instituted in the college game in 1996.
143 Receiving yardage for WSU redshirt freshman Dominique Williams, who became an every-down player when Marquess Wilson left the team.
"I'm really excited to come back and see Cougar football on the rise. It's tough, but I can say that I helped start it. I love Pullman, and I love WSU football." — WSU running back Carl Winston.
For Washington, a bowl game still to be determined. For WSU, an offseason that will be much easier to endure.
