Updated: Gubernatorial newspaper endorsement tally: 12 recommend Rob McKenna, while Olympian gives Jay Inslee the nod

The Olympian newspaper in the state capital has strongly recommended Jay Inslee for governor.

In the Olympian's Oct. 18 editorial, "Jay Inslee the superior candidate for South Sound interests," the editorial board says a Democrat would much better serve the residents in Thurston County

Democrats have controlled the governor’s office for 28 years, and created a whole generation of state workers who have never worked for a Republican. That works against McKenna in a region dominated by state employees.

McKenna’s promise to bring radical change and reform to state government, while appealing to some, creates an employment uncertainty that won’t charm the majority of rank-and-file government workers or top agency managers casting South Sound ballots.

Inslee is more than the safe choice for Thurston County, he’s a better match with voters on a number of key issues: clean energy, health care and an approach to taxes.

Meanwhile, the Kitsap Sun, which circulates in Inslee's hometown of Bainbridge Island, became the 11th daily Washington newspaper to recommend Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna for governor.

The Kitsap Sun commended both candidates for some interesting ideas, but recommended voters elect Rob McKenna, in part, because he offered more specifics.

Overall, through his demonstrated capabilities, sharp focus and detail in his plans, McKenna inspires more confidence that he would serve well as our next governor. We recommend voters give him that opportunity on Nov. 6.

The editorial boards that endorsed McKenna at the other 10 dailies are:
