The Times recommends: Re-elect U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in Washington's 3rd Congressional District
Voters in Washington's 3rd Congressional District should elect U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler to her second term.
Seattle Times Editorial
U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler is the most qualified candidate in a thin field as she runs for a second term in the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District.
The Republican has shown the ability to put the needs of Southwestern Washington first, voting against her party and automatic spending cuts. She also was one of seven Republicans who voted to extend payroll-tax cuts.
However, Herrera Beutler has also signed the Grover Norquist pledge opposing tax increases, a rigid partisan campaign that shuts down any chance of compromises to reduce national debt.
Her opponents — Jon T. Haugen, a Democrat and a military veteran, and Norma Jean Stevens, an Independent — lack Herrera Beutler's experience. Neither has raised any funds for their campaigns.
