The decision for voters in the 41st Legislative District race between state Rep. Marcie Maxwell and Tim Eaves has been cast as a choice between either a candidate with experience in government or in business.

Bold strategies creating jobs and better supporting our state’s struggling businesses must be the priority going forward. The Times recommends Eaves, a small-business owner with a smart grasp on fiscal accountability. The Republican is a longtime owner of a metal-fabrication company and a fiscal conservative.

Maxwell has represented Renton and nearby communities since 2008, but has failed in that time to carve out an independent voice on bold government reforms.

She is known for supporting early learning and improving K-12 science and math education.

But Eaves also supports improving K-12 education and strengthening the pipeline of skilled workers needed by our region’s businesses.

Eaves is a mechanical engineer who places more emphasis on college degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. That makes sense.

The challenger is a political newcomer compared with Maxwell, who before the Legislature served on the Renton School Board.

But Eaves brings a compelling civic résumé, including involvement in the YMCA Indian Guides and Indian Princesses and as a leader in numerous Eastside youth sports leagues.

Eaves is the right choice.
