Assistant coach promoted to take over Gonzaga’s women’s basketball program

Lisa Fortier gets head coaching position after being an assistant for seven seasons

SPOKANE — Gonzaga assistant women’s basketball coach Lisa Fortier was promoted to head coach Monday, replacing Kelly Graves, who left for Oregon after 14 seasons with the Bulldogs.

Fortier has coached at Gonzaga for seven seasons, including the Bulldogs’ current run of six consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. Terms of her contract were not disclosed.

“She is a tireless recruiter who will continue the tradition of bringing tremendous student-athletes to Gonzaga and then developing them into great college basketball players,” said Mike Roth, the GU athletic director.


• Central Washington announced Shawn Nelson has resigned as head coach. Nelson, who came to CWU from Carroll College, took over the program in 2011. He was 25-53 in his three seasons.


• Six different Huskies had two hits as Washington (25-7-1) posted a 14-3 home baseball victory over Northern Colorado (5-30). Ryan Wiggins did the most damage with four RBI while Brian Wolfe had three RBI. Trevor Mitsui had a homer and two RBI.

• Gonzaga’s Alice Kim holds the first-round lead of the West Coast Conference women’s golf championship with a 69 at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Bremerton. The Zags are at 292, in second place, seven shots behind Pepperdine. In the men’s WCC at Gold Mountain, Gonzaga was in eighth place at 295 with Brigham Young leading at 285. Sean Walsh had a 70 for the Zags.

• Washington holds a one-stroke lead over USC at 581 after two rounds of the Silverado Showdown women’s golf tournament on the North Course at Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif. SooBin Kim of the Huskies is third individually at 139. Washington State is 15th in the 15-team field at 616.

• Trinity Lutheran College of Everett announced that the school’s application to membership in the NAIA has been approved and it will begin competing at that level in the fall.

• The Legends Tour of the LPGA announced it is canceling its 2014 Seattle stop, originally set for July 27-28 at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore. The tour has played at Inglewood the past two years.

• Washington swept the Pac-12 weekly awards in softball, with Kaitlin Inglesby named pitcher of the week and Kylee Lahners named player of the week. Inglesby went 2-0 in three appearances with two complete games. Lahners was 5 for 10 with two home runs, one double and four RBI.

• Washington State left-hander Joe Pistorese was named the Pac-12 pitcher of the week. Pistorese threw his second consecutive complete game to beat Oregon State 4-1. He gave up four hits and struck out four.
