Saturday, Feb. 8, will mark the second-annual Stairway Walks Day.

Last year, more than 260 people joined 15 simultaneous local walks that collectively covered a total of 70,000 stairs and more than 500 miles in two hours.

Organizers are aiming higher this time. Trained “neighborhood walking ambassadors” will lead 18 family-friendly walks in Bellevue, Burien and Seattle. All the walks will be from 10 a.m. to noon.

Last year, every stairway walk filled up in advance so organizers urge you to register at

“Stairways provide a great way to exercise, improve health and get to know a neighborhood,” says Feet First Executive Director Lisa Quinn. (It so happens the event coincides with Seattle’s Neighborhood Appreciation Day.)

The routes are featured in Cathy and Jake Jaramillo’s book “Seattle Stairway Walks: An Up-and-Down Guide to City Neighborhoods.”
