SAN DIEGO — Unbeaten Woodinville overcame a slow start to win its fifth straight girls basketball game, handling Orange, N.J., 58-42 Tuesday night in the first round of the Surf 'N Slam Tournament.

Woodinville was tied 21-21 at halftime before dominating the New Jersey team in the second half.

LeeAnn Palo, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, scored 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting with seven assists for the Falcons (5-0). Junior guard Ashley Tuiasosopo hit 5 of 7 shots for 13 points and had six rebounds, six steals and four assists, and Amanda Best scored 11.

Woodinville plays the Archbishop Prendergast Pandas of Drexel Hill, Pa., today. Woodinville's final game in the tournament will be Friday at noon against Service High School of Anchorage, which placed second in Alaska last year and returns all of its starters.

Franklin 40, Maple Ridge, B.C., 39

At Eastlake High School in Sammamish, Maple Ridge missed a free throw with 1.8 seconds remaining as Franklin (1-2) escaped with a victory. Bridgenae Greene's eight points led the Quakers.

Fairfax (Los Angeles) 54, West Seattle 29

At Eastlake, Fairfax connected on five consecutive three-point shots to take a 19-6 first-quarter lead. Irina Sharf scored 14 for the Los Angeles school. Nicole Nedervelt's eight points led West Seattle (0-7).

Bert Church, Alberta, 52 Cleveland 44

At Eastlake, the Eagles lost their tournament opener despite 15 points from Seanitta Tatum.

Inglemoor 77, Hermiston, Ore., 32

In Ellensburg, Bianca Cooper had 15 points, Sarah Ena collected 14 points and eight rebounds, Ashley Brown scored 13 and Mandy Augustavo 11 as the Vikings (4-1) breezed to a win in their opener.

West Valley (Yakima) 40, Mount Si 36

In Ellensburg, Brittany Murillo scored on a layup for West Valley after an inbounds pass to snap a 32-32 tie with 1:42 remaining. Madison Yakaboski had 13 rebounds for Mount Si (5-3), which plays Sandpoint, Idaho, this morning.

Bainbridge 71, Yelm 39

In Buckley, Caitlyn Salo scored 14 points and three teammates — Kaitlin Bailey, Lindsey Bratonia and Brittany Gray — added 10 each as the Spartans (9-0), ranked third in the state in Class 3A, rolled.

White River 71, Sequim 32

White River, the state's sixth-ranked 3A team, buried Sequim with a 30-7 first-quarter burst. Sequim (2-5) committed 35 turnovers. Kelly Brons had 18 points, Megan Borjesson and Kaysie Kiel scored 15 apiece, and Jennifer Sorensen and Michelle Brons each had seven assists for the Hornets (7-1).

South Sound Shootout

Olympia 39, Lakes 33

At Green River CC in Auburn, 6-3 Whitney Champlin dominated both ends of the floor for the Bears. The Oregon State recruit scored 20 points. Chene Cooper scored 12 to lead Lakes (5-2), which was hurt by 26 turnovers.

Christmas Classic

Seattle Christian 38, Rainier Christian 21

Noelle Simpson's 17 points and a 12-1 fourth-quarter run led the Warriors (4-2) past the Mustangs (3-4). Lindsey Ferguson had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Rainier Christian.
