Notebook | Bjorklund, Gray win AP state honors

Angie Bjorklund will head to Tennessee next season as one of Washington's most decorated girls basketball players.

On Friday, the senior guard from Spokane's University High School was named Associated Press state player of the year for the second consecutive season, edging Kentwood's Courtney Vandersloot.

Bainbridge senior Steven Gray, who will play for Gonzaga next season, was an overwhelming choice for boys player of the year.

Lynnwood picks coach

Lynnwood assistant Dorian Manza has been promoted to head football coach.

He replaces Reggie Corns, a former assistant who took over head-coaching duties when John Morris unexpectedly resigned four days before the 2006 season opener. The Royals were 0-10 last season.

Manza, a 1999 graduate of Sunnyside High School who earned a degree in kinesiology from Washington State, coordinates the strength training and agility program for all athletes at Lynnwood.

• The Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association has honored Gray, coach Colin Slingsby of Chief Sealth and Seattle Christian High School with "outstanding ambassador" awards. Seattle Christian earned its award for being selected "best host school" by officials.
