Kaitlin Monnahan scored Roosevelt's final 10 points as the Roughriders survived an upset bid by Franklin for a 52-48 girls basketball victory Wednesday night in the Sea-King 4A District tournament.
Roosevelt (18-3) advanced to a winner-to-state game Saturday against seventh-ranked Inglemoor at 8:15 p.m. at Juanita High School. Franklin (11-10) must beat Garfield at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Juanita to stay alive.
Roosevelt, playing without injured standout forward Frannie Hemmelgarn, had its hands full against Franklin. Monnahan, a 5-foot-7 junior averaging 4.4 points, came to the rescue, scoring all of her points late in the game for a season high. She hit a three-pointer to put the Roughriders ahead by four, then hit seven consecutive free throws before missing her last one.
Carol Howard scored a game-high 14 points for the Quakers.
Sea-King 4A girls
At Ballard 49, Lake Washington 34
Jeanette Hansen, a 6-5 Danish exchange student, controlled the paint with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to help the sixth-ranked Beavers (19-2) move one win from a state-tournament spot. Ballard plays Eastlake in a winner-to-state game Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Juanita. Sophomore forward Alexandria Lawrence had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Ballard. Katie Rasmussen scored a game-high 14 points for the Kangs (11-10).
At Eastlake 56, Redmond 53
Alyssa Charlston, a 6-foot sophomore, had 18 points and 13 rebounds and went 4 of 4 at the foul line at the end of the game to help the Wolves (15-6) slip past the Mustangs (15-7). Hannah Ostic got all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter for Eastlake. Courtney Martin scored a game-high 22 points and hit 12 of 14 free throws for Redmond, which plays Lake Washington in a loser-out game Saturday at 3 p.m.
Metro League girls
Bainbridge 72, Bishop Blanchet 53
At Roosevelt, 6-foot junior Brittany Gray was unstoppable with 34 points and 18 rebounds as the Spartans (15-5) claimed a spot in the Sea-King District tournament. Bainbridge plays Rainier Beach Saturday in a seeding game. Jamie Johnson scored 18 for Blanchet (8-14), which faces Holy Names in a winner-to-district, loser-out game Saturday night.
Rainier Beach 58, Holy Names 47
At Roosevelt, Ronnie Palmer scored 20 points and Jasmine Cochran got 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Vikings (11-9) hold off the Cougars (11-11) and claim a district-tournament berth. An 18-8 third-quarter run by Beach was the difference. Erika Johnson of Holy Names scored 18.
KingCo 3A girls
Skyline 61, Mount Si 48 (loser out)
At Sammamish High School, Lindsey Perry's 23 points led the Spartans (13-9) to the Sea-King District tournament and ended the season for the Wildcats (10-13). Skyline got KingCo's No. 5 seed to district. Caitie Richards scored 20 for Mount Si.
WesCo 3A girls
Arlington 59, Lynnwood 33
Kyra Prause's 22 points led the Eagles (8-13) past the Royals (3-17). Arlington plays Shorecrest for seeding into the Northwest 3A District tournament.
Metro League boys
Bishop Blanchet 63, Ingraham 51
At Roosevelt, Stephen Reinhart scored 23 points (10 in the fourth quarter) and Brian Matous added 15 as the Braves (8-14) clinched a district-tournament spot. Blanchet plays Bainbridge Saturday in a seeding game. Mike Grundy scored 24 for the Rams (6-15), who face West Seattle Saturday in a winner-to-district, loser-out game Saturday.
Bainbridge 62, West Seattle 61
At Roosevelt, 6-10 junior Ben Eisenhardt had 18 points and seven rebounds, Caleb Davis scored 15 and Mike Walsh had 14 points as the Spartans (13-9) advanced to district. Malcholm Love scored 18 for West Seattle (9-13), which got a three-pointer from Keenan Allen with two seconds remaining to make it a one-point margin at the finish.
KingCo 3A boys
Newport 65, Mount Si 53 (loser out)
At Sammamish High School, Richard Woodworth had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Collin Bennett added 20 points to give the Knights (10-12) the No. 5 district-tournament berth from KingCo 3A. Tanner Riley scored 17 in the final game for Mount Si (10-12).
