Kennedy's state-championship team swept the top awards for the Class 3A All-State Softball Team, with pitcher Karli Merlich earning Player of the Year and Dino Josie the Coach of the Year.

The team was chosen by statewide media and coordinated by the Tri-City Herald. Players had to get at least two votes to be honored.

Merlich and Josie led Kennedy of Burien to its second consecutive 3A title. Lancers outfielder Maggie Whaley also was on the first team.

Eastlake coach George Crowder was named 4A Coach of the Year. Pitcher Sam Skillingstad of Shadle Park was Player of the Year.

Two Eastlake players led four Seattle-area players on the 4A first team — pitcher Stephanie Fox and outfielder Kimi Pohlman.

Two Auburn Riverside players led eight locals on the 3A first team. Amanda Fitzsimmons was honored as a pitcher and Katie Grad as an outfielder. Grad, a Washington State basketball recruit, also was an all-state pick in that sport.

Fassler, Somoza honored in soccer

Evan Fassler of Cedarcrest was named 2A Player of the Year, and Ben Somoza of King's was 1A Coach of the Year in the All-State Boys Soccer Team. Fassler was joined by R.J. Sorenson, a midfielder for the Duvall school, on the 2A first team.

Two Auburn Riverside players led six local players on the 3A first team — Oscar Diaz and Jermaine Haller.
