MOUNT VERNON — Jonathan Cho scored two second-half goals and assisted on a third as Shorecrest rolled past Mount Vernon 3-0 for the Northwest 3A District championship and a berth in the state playoffs.

Glenn Paden's goal 15 minutes into the second half broke a scoreless tie, and Cho followed with the first of his goals four minutes later.

It's the seventh consecutive trip to state for the Scots (17-1-0), ranked second in Class 3A behind Mercer Island.

Coach Drew Thompson said the Scots hope to return to the trophy ceremonies after being knocked out in the quarterfinals the past two years. Their last trophy came in 2005, when they won the state title.

"We set the bar pretty high at Shorecrest these past few years," said Thompson.

"There's several good teams out there. This time of year it's so hard to tell who's going to step up and do well. ... Anything can happen in the playoffs."

Lakeside claims another trip to state

Lakeside overcame a first-half deficit with two goals in the final 15 minutes to beat Bainbridge 2-1 at Interbay Stadium in a winner-to-state boys soccer game.

The Lions (12-2-1), ranked fifth in the state, claimed third place in the Metro League tournament.

It's Lakeside's 12th state-playoff trip in the past 13 seasons. First-round games are scheduled for Tuesday.

Carter Appleton scored the tying goal in the 65th minute and Guy Thyer added the go-ahead score with an assist from Billy Crutcher five minutes later for Lakeside.

Bainbridge can still advance to state by beating Sammamish, the No. 2 KingCo 3A representative, in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Interbay.

Tonight, Seattle Prep plays Nathan Hale at 7 at Interbay for the Metro tournament championship in a game between teams that have already qualified for state.
