Eastlake's Kevin Penner won a state golf championship Thursday in breathtaking fashion.

Seattle Prep's Katrina Hegge won too, but without the drama.

Penner took the Class 4A boys title at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, beating Snohomish teammates Michael Jaeger and Dylan Stensland in a playoff after they finished 36 holes tied at 1-under-par 143.

Penner had taken the first-round lead Wednesday with a 4-under 68 and shot 75 Thursday. Jaeger (71) and Stensland (72), meanwhile, finished strong to force the tie.

It was the second state title for Penner, a senior who has committed to UNLV. He also won in 2007, and tied for third last year.

Defending 4A boys champ Reid Martin of Kamiak finished eight strokes behind the leaders at 77-74 — 151, seven over par.

Jaeger and Stensland led Snohomish to the team championship over runner-up Kentwood.

In the 3A girls tournament, Hegge, a senior, shot even-par 72 at Horn Rapids GC in Richland after building a big first-round lead with a women's course-record 67 Wednesday. It was her second state title. She won as a freshman in 2006.

Hegge (67-72 — 139) finished five strokes ahead of Foster's Mallory Kent (73-71 — 144), with 2008 state champ Kristin Tan of Holy Names next at 76-74 — 150. Cassie Pless of Holy Names tied for fifth to help the Seattle school take the team title over runner-up Mercer Island.

Other boys

• Mount Si had three golfers in the top nine — runner-up Mike Rutledge, Jack Kelly (seventh) and Bradley Harrelson (tied for ninth) — to run away with the 3A boys team championship at Meadow Springs CC in Richland.

• Squalicum's Matt Rawitzer, who won the 3A title last year, took the 2A boys championship by one stroke.

• King's of Shoreline won the 1A boys team title at Columbia Point GC in Richland, led by third-place Calvin McCutcheon, who was three strokes back of winner Zach Wanderscheid of Goldendale.

Other girls

Chessey Thomas of Spokane's Lewis and Clark shot a 4-under 68 at Sun Willows GC in Pasco to overtake Kamiak's Seo Hee Moon, the first-round leader and 2007 state champ, for the 4A girls title. Thomas finished at 139. Moon was a stroke back at 69-71 — 140.

Claire Rachor of Bellingham, Kelli Bowers of Chelan and Kristen Rue of Life Christian repeated as 2A, 1A and 2B/1B girls champs, respectively. Rue finished 1-under at Tri-City CC in Kennewick with a 72-69 — 141.
