Joe Steele among WIAA inductees

Joe Steele, a former Bishop Blanchet running back and Washington Huskies star, highlights the 2010 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame class.

Joe Steele, the former Bishop Blanchet running back who went on to help the University of Washington win the 1978 Rose Bowl, highlights the 2010 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame class.

Steele is among four athletes, four coaches, one team and four others to be inducted May 12 at Renton's Spirit of Washington Events Center.

Steele rushed for 3,814 yards and 44 touchdowns and helped Blanchet win the 1974 AAA (now Class 4A) state championship. After graduating in 1976, Steele went on to a standout career with the Huskies from 1976-79 and was inducted in the Husky Hall of Fame in 1996.

Other inductees

Tom Gorman, Seattle Prep, 1964. Gorman won the state tennis title three years in a row. He played at Seattle University and had a successful professional career. He was a member of the 1972 United States Davis Cup team and coached the Davis Cup team to victories in 1990 and 1992.

Jeanne Eggart Helfer, Walla Walla, 1977: Helfer competed in basketball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. She was a javelin state champion and led the Blue Devils to three state basketball titles while setting multiple state-tournament records. She went on to compete in basketball and track at Washington State.

Rick Noji, Franklin, 1985. Noji won state titles in the high jump, long jump and 200 meters. In 1984, he set a state record in the high jump (7 feet, 4 inches) at the Metro League championships. His record stands today. Noji competed for Washington and was a six-time All-American.

Also being inducted: Brian Steves, music educator in the Mukilteo School District, fine arts; Mead boys cross country teams, 1976 to 2008; Frank Ahern, coach at several schools in the Seattle area over seven decades; Virginia Greenlee, Renton volleyball coach; Irv Leifer, Renton basketball coach from 1947-77; Jerry Penney, boys and girls gymnastics coach at Sammamish; Ken Jones, longtime basketball official; Don Davison, sports writer and historian; Bob Regan, longtime state swimming announcer and meet manager.
