Girls lacrosse championship matches Saturday

Lakeside will go for its fifth consecutive championship when the Division I and II girls lacrosse state-title games are played Saturday at Eastside Catholic.

SAMMAMISH — Defending champ Lakeside plays Bainbridge Island in Division I and Eastside Catholic faces Kennedy in Division II for girls lacrosse state championships Saturday at Eastside Catholic High School.

In a rematch of the 2009 double-overtime thriller won by Lakeside, Bainbridge will try to dethrone the four-time defending state champion Lions in the Division 1 game at 2 p.m. Lakeside was one of just two girls teams that finished the regular season undefeated.

The Lions are led by senior captain Sylvia Warren, who had 52 goals and 17 assists in the regular season and six goals and four assists in the postseason. She is the fifth-leading scorer in Division I.

Bainbridge's only regular-season loss came March 16 in a season-opening 20-10 road loss to Lakeside. It was the only meeting by the two powerhouse teams this season. The Spartans are led by junior captain Jaclyn Biggers with 61 goals and 20 assists in the regular season and eight goals and five assists in the postseason.

Lakeside defeated Tacoma 20-5 in the quarterfinals and Lake Sammamish 19-9 in the semifinals. Bainbridge had a 20-3 quarterfinal win over Bellevue and a 17-4 semifinal defeat of Snohomish.

In the 11 a.m. Division II title game, Eastside Catholic will face Kennedy for the first time in a state-title match. The Crusaders have the league's leading scorer, senior Alex Foreman (60 goals, eight assists in the regular season).

Kennedy has won six straight. The Lancers are led by senior captain Natalie Merrill (47 goals, 21 assists in the regular season, nine postseason goals).

In semifinal matches, Eastside Catholic beat rival Issaquah 13-8 in the semifinals and Kennedy dropped Overlake 14-11.

The title games will be preceded by an Under-11 girls youth game at 9 a.m.

The boys state-championship matches will be May 29 at Seattle Memorial Stadium.
