TACOMA — A tear trickled down Kaela Yuen's cheek as she walked toward the Mercer Island locker room in the Tacoma Dome on Friday.

"I hate it when they cry," the coach said of her players.

The Islanders (21-9) were sad to see their comeback season end in a 57-47 loss to seventh-ranked Kamiakin of Kennewick in the consolation round of the Class 3A state girls basketball tournament. The Braves (19-6), who play University of Spokane Valley at 8 a.m. Saturday to decide fourth and sixth places, were sparked by junior guard Sira Toure, who scored 15 of her 26 points in the opening quarter.

MI made a remarkable run to the Tacoma Dome after finishing 5-15 last season.

"I'm just really proud of them," Yuen said. "They stuck with the goal. They know what it feels like, they know what it takes, and we're already planning for next year."

Freshman Jess Blakeslee led MI on Friday with 13 points, and sophomore Julia Blumenstein added 11. Senior Christina Williamson grabbed 10 rebounds.

Kayleigh Valley did a little of everything to ensure a trophy for the Titans, putting together 11 points, six rebounds, six steals and two assists.

"She's a stud," Glacier Peak coach Brian Hill said.

Valley, a 5-foot-11 senior who will play in college at Montana, put University ahead 47-41 with 2:58 to play, stealing the ball under her own basket and putting it in at the other end.

Allie Weathersby scored 19 for Glacier Peak (18-8).
