Prep athletes of the week
Garfield’s Cameron Stanish, Lake Washington’s Julia Turner and the Glacier Peak softball team are high school athletes of the week.
Cameron Stanish, Garfield boys track and field
Stanish continues his climb in the distance world as he now ranks in the top 20 nationally in both the 1,600 and 3,200 after his wins at the 4A Bi-District championships. His times of 4:10.19 and 8:56.88 broke school and meet records. “It’s a culmination of four years of hard work,” Garfield distance coach Coulter Leslie said. “He wasn’t a child prodigy. He’s definitely earned his way to the top.”
Julia Turner, Lake Washington softball
Turner, a junior outfielder who attends Overlake, turned on the power to help lead the Kangaroos to the Northwest 2A District championship. After going 4 for 5 with a home run in their opening, 14-4 win over Lynden, she drove in both runs in the 2-1, title-game win over Sultan, one on a solo HR. “She’s had solid at-bats all season and worked hard,” coach Traci Tawney said. “Now she’s seeing the results she’s been looking for.”
Glacier Peak softball team
Callie Bircher got the job done in the circle and at the plate in leading the Grizzlies to their first-ever Northwest 3A District championship, a 3-2 victory against Ferndale. Coach Caitlin Nies’ crew also beat Everett, 5-3, and Meadowdale, 7-3, to earn a state berth for the first time in school history.
