SUMNER — The University Prep girls soccer team won the state 1A title in the fall. Alec Duxbury, the same coach who guided the girls, now has the U-Prep boys one win from a state crown of their own.
Sophomore Justin Ting punched in a misplayed clearing kick in the 12th minute and senior goalkeeper Ben Ramsay posted three saves as the Pumas defeated King’s 1-0 Friday in a 1A semifinal at Sunset Chev Stadium.
University Prep (12-3-2) will face Quincy (14-4), a 2-1 winner over Chelan, in the state 1A championship match Saturday at 2 p.m. King’s (17-5-1) will play Chelan (16-5-1) for third place at 10 a.m.
The Pumas, who split two regular-season matches with King’s, won despite being outshot 12-6 by the Knights and attempting just three corner kicks to six for King’s.
“They’re a really good team,” Duxbury said. “They came after us, and we survived the five- and 10-minute stretches when they were all over us.”
Ting scored when King’s keeper Lars Helleren (three saves), moving quickly, attempted to clear a ball near the edge of the box but it ricocheted off a teammate, dropping in front of Ting for an open-net opportunity.
“There was just some miscommunication,” King’s coach Aaron Harrington said. “It was kind of a weird deal.”
The Knights pressured Prep’s defense early in the second half. Taylor Moe just missed on a header and later Yoon Gu Han had a close-range opportunity on a rebound with Ramsay near the far post. Senior Max Klepinger retreated to the line and booted away Han’s shot.
“I call that putting the ball in the mixer,” said Duxbury, who praised the defense of Gabe Rifkin and Barry Bishop. “There’s a lot of stuff going on in there when a ball drops into all that confusion and everybody is taking cuts at it. That would have been a huge momentum shift if it had gone in.”
“We had a lot of chances,” Harrington said. “We just didn’t finish them. We were all around the goal, but it only matters if it gets between the posts.”
Quincy 2, Chelan 1
Freddy Ruiz (14th minute) and Daniel Contreras (58th minute) scored unassisted goals to put the Jackrabbits in the school’s first 1A state soccer title match. Juan Garcia, with an assist from Cristian Barajas, scored in the 53rd minute for Chelan.
Squalicum 5, Toppenish 0
Brandon Burbank, Eli Guidroz and Tyler Hughes scored first-half goals and Zachary Wallace and Avery Wolfe scored in the second half as the Storm (20-0-2) rolled in a 2A boys semifinal.
Capital 1, Sedro-Woolley 0 (SO)
Sophomore goalkeeper Van Soderberg stuffed the last three penalty kicks he faced to give Capital (21-0-2) a 3-2 advantage in a shootout. The Cougars face Squalicum for the 2A title Saturday at 5 p.m. Sedro-Woolley (15-5-3) and Toppenish (16-5) play for third at noon.
