Nuts! Squirrel dampens UW's Spirit for 2 games

It will be a Dog-less Day Afternoon at Husky Stadium today as Washington announced Friday that its canine mascot, Spirit, has been placed on the disabled list after suffering a recent shoulder injury.

It will be a Dog-less Day Afternoon at Husky Stadium today as Washington announced Friday that its canine mascot, Spirit, has been placed on the disabled list after suffering a recent shoulder injury.

A spokesman explained that Spirit, an Alaskan Malamute, was injured while apparently chasing a squirrel and then stepping into a hole. Spirit will not attend today's game against BYU, and it is unclear how long he will be sidelined.

Spirit has been the school's mascot since 1999 and has been scheduled to retire at the end of this season. The school expects to announce plans soon about a new mascot to represent its athletic program.

Spirit, the 10th Alaskan Malamute to have served as the Huskies' mascot, leads the team out of the tunnel before every home game, accompanied by trainer Kim Cross.
