The Washington Huskies got the worst news possible Sunday on freshman running back Deontae Cooper, learning that he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in practice Saturday night and will be out for the rest of the season.

The school reported in a statement that he will have surgery at some point in the next two weeks.

A true freshman from Perris, Calif., Cooper will be able to redshirt the season and still have four years of eligibility remaining. He was injured while being tackled following a 32-yard run early during a full-contact portion of practice at Husky Stadium.

The 6-foot, 193-pounder was one of the more highly touted members of UW's recruiting class after rushing for 7,450 yards and 107 touchdowns during his career at Citrus Hill High.

He was one of four members of the Class of 2010 who enrolled early and participated in spring practice, impressing enough that Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian said early on it was not in question whether he would play this season.

The only question was just how many carries Cooper might get at a tailback position that appeared loaded with the return of Chris Polk, who rushed for 1,113 yards last season as a freshman; and freshman Jesse Callier, who was competing with Cooper for playing time behind Polk.

Washington now has four healthy scholarship tailbacks — Polk, Callier, junior Johri Fogerson and sophomore Demitrius Bronson.

The injury is the first of significance in fall camp. The Huskies were off Sunday but will practice twice Monday, at 8:45 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.
