Shaquille Thompson, one of the marquee members of Washington's 2012 football recruiting class, was taken in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft Wednesday, selected 571st overall by the Boston Red Sox.

A right-handed outfielder, the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder told The Sacramento Bee that he is looking to sign with the Red Sox while still continuing to play football at Washington. NCAA rules allow for an athlete to play professionally in one sport while remaining eligible in another — Jake Locker signed with the Angels before the 2009 season, for instance, though he never played in games, and then played out the last two years of his UW career.

Thompson hit .305 for Grant High in Sacramento this spring but intrigued scouts with the same athleticism that made him the consensus No. 1 safety prospect in the nation last year.

Thompson said after signing with UW that he hoped to get drafted and play baseball in the summers and then play football with Washington in the fall. Huskies coaches agreed during the recruiting process to let Thompson play both sports.

Huskies add Idaho State in 2013

Washington announced it has added a home game against Idaho State to fill out its 2013 nonconference schedule. The Huskies will host the Bengals, of the FCS Big Sky Conference, on Sept. 21. Washington had earlier announced a home game against Boise State on Sept. 7 that will open the new Husky Stadium. The Huskies will play at Illinois on Sept. 14.
