Record 8 Huskies taken in MLB draft

Seven UW players drafted Saturday after right-hander Jeff Brigham went in the fourth round Friday.

The Washington baseball team’s breakthrough year hit another high in the MLB draft, with eight Huskies selected in the past two days — the most ever for the UW program, according to the Baseball America draft database.

After junior right-hander Jeff Brigham was drafted Friday by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth round, seven more Huskies were drafted in the final 30 rounds on Saturday.

Outfielder Robert Pehl was the first selected, going to Kansas City in the 11th round. Right-hander Jared Fisher went to Philadelphia in the 15th round.

Outfielder Brian Wolfe, who hit a Pac-12-best .381 in 30 conference games, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 20th round. Shortstop Erik Forgione, the Pac-12 defensive player of the year, went to the Pirates in the 25th round.

First baseman Trevor Mitsui (Arizona) and right-hander Trevor Dunlap (Tampa Bay) were drafted just seven picks apart in the 30th round, and second baseman Andrew Ely (who leads the nation with 59 sacrifice bunts this season) went to the Cubs in the 32nd round.

All eight draftees were key figures in the Huskies’ first NCAA postseason berth since 2004.

The Huskies, picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12, were ranked in the top 10 for much of the season and finished second in the conference.
