Jazmine Davis didn’t care that Washington was down 25 points.

“Don’t take me out,” she told UW coach Mike Neighbors as he made substitutions with under nine minutes left in a matchup against No. 24 Arizona State on Sunday.

Davis played 35 minutes and led UW with 23 points, but the Huskies couldn’t keep up with the Sun Devils in a 78-60 loss before 2,384 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena.

“I kind of got that (mentality) playing with Kristi Kingma,” Davis said. “She’s always had the mindset if there was 30 seconds left and we were down 30, she felt we could still make it. That’s how I felt — that we could still make it.”

Kelsey Plum added 16 for UW, while ASU (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) had five players finish in double figures. The Sun Devils’ reserves outscored the UW bench 45-10.

Washington (8-5, 1-1) continues its stretch of three games in five days against rival Washington State (8-6, 2-0) on Tuesday in Pullman.

“I still (thought) we could battle back, and we needed that energy,” Davis said. “It didn’t happen for us, but I think one of these days it will.”

ASU outrebounded Washington 8-0 during a 18-3 run to build a 24-9 lead in the first half. Sophomore guard Elisha Davis capped the run with a three-pointer with 12:30 left in the period.

The Sun Devils made 4 of 6 three-pointers and outscored the Huskies 10-0 in the paint during the run.

“It was almost like we didn’t know the game started,” Davis said.

ASU took a 47-29 lead into the break behind a balanced attack. No ASU player scored more than nine points before halftime, but nine members of its 11-player rotation scored at least one basket in the half.

The visitors had determination after being upset 85-78 at WSU on Friday. That ended a 10-game winning streak for the Sun Devils, potentially knocking them out of national polls.

Arizona State freshman Kelsey Moos, who starred at Reardan High about 20 miles west of Spokane, finished with 11 points and five rebounds on Sunday. Sophomore guard Katie Hempen led the Sun Devils with 12 points.

“They had, like, a two-hour practice (Saturday),” Neighbors said. “They were still going after I left to go home, so we knew they were going to be really intense and focused. We just never responded.”

Washington practiced without freshmen Katie Collier (hamstring) and Chantel Osahor (stress fracture) but both post players appeared against ASU. It was Osahor’s third game of the season after fighting through an earlier shoulder injury.

The pair was limited to a combined 20 minutes against ASU. With the limited support, starters Aminah Williams and Talia Walton struggled to effectively defend ASU senior reserve Joy Burke and talented freshmen Moos and Sophie Brunner.

UW was outscored 8-2 in second-chance shot opportunities and outrebounded 44-32 overall. The Sun Devils had 15 offensive rebounds to the Huskies’ six.

“We really need to forget about this game,” UW senior guard Mercedes Wetmore said.
