SAN FRANCISCO – Junior Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington’s record-setting tight end, said after the Fight Hunger Bowl that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

“I’m going to enter the 2014 draft,” he said. “(It’s) very exciting. The idea that I can provide for my mother and play at the highest level in the world for football and compete against the best guys in the world — it’s a very exciting idea. I’m very excited for the next chapter in my life.”

The 6-foot-7, 270-pound Seferian-Jenkins, a Fox Island product, was graded as a second-round draft choice in the NFL evaluation he requested earlier this month. He won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end this season.

He had a 16-yard touchdown catch from Keith Price in UW’s 31-16 victory over Brigham Young on Friday night, extending his school record for a tight end to 21 career touchdown receptions.

“I’ve done everything I can at the University of Washington. … I know I’m ready for the NFL,” he said, adding: “I need to take care of my mom and make sure she’s financially OK. She’s done so much for me, it’s the least thing I can do.”

Junior running back Bishop Sankey said after the game he is undecided about his future and hoped to make a decision in the next week or so. The deadline for underclassmen to declare is Jan. 15.
