Mel digs their creation, too

Lots of Mel Brooks sightings around town: Mel dines at the Met! Mel hangs at the bar at the Grand Hyatt! Mel thinks he's in New York and tries to hail a cab on the street! He's probably still standing there!

The famed entertainer is in town with the Broadway-bound "Young Frankenstein" at the Paramount, of course. Seattle's Union Square Grill, popular among the theater crowd, came up with Frankenstein-themed cocktails and dessert for the occasion.

"It's nice to have such a big production come into Seattle," says general manager Josh Anderson. "We wanted to support it. It sort of adds to the whole experience of the night."

So when Mel stopped in for dinner the other night, the restaurant served up the Frankenstein cocktail and Chocolate Frankenstein Tower. He declined the drink — he said he was working, but I personally think it's because the cocktail looks like it contains actual blood — but happily accepted the dessert; Mel dug right in. ...

WHO KNEW? Jerry Lee is a local figure known for architecture and philanthropy, but he apparently moonlights as a waiter, fashion plate and quick-change artist. During a luncheon at Anthony's to welcome a group of touring Chinese pop stars, wife Charlene Lee laughed when told that someone had mistaken her husband — looking rather chic in an Asian-inspired all-black ensemble — for one of the musicians.

"You should have seen him this morning. He was wearing one of those hats with the dreadlocks attached, and I painted a big 'L' on his forehead," she said. Casual Friday at Lee's MulvannyG2 Architecture? Hardly. Lee had served breakfast to his employees after losing in a company basketball tournament. Now that's service with a smile. ...

THAT'S CRAZYBERRY! PART TWO: Neighbors atop Queen Anne Hill are griping about rumors that Peet's Coffee will take over the closing Ravenna Gardens spot at Queen Anne Avenue and McGraw Street. That corner is already home to a Starbucks, Tully's and Cafe Ladro.

"It's sad that [coffee] is all that can afford to go on top of Queen Anne anymore," says resident Stacya Silverman, who is also my eyebrow waxer. "What do we need four coffee shops on one corner for? Plus there's a Starbucks in the Safeway [next door to Tully's]." So where does Silverman get her morning fix? "I get my coffee at Eat Local. It's right, like, a block away." ...

ANYWHERE, USA: There's already a Prius on seemingly every corner, and starting in October, Seattle will star in new ads for the popular hybrid. Sort of. A crew from the L.A. offices of marketing firm Saatchi & Saatchi shot locations around town — including the Cyclops Cafe in Belltown and the downtown Macy's — for the new Prius sales brochure, but they're designed to look as generic as possible.

"I was looking for an urban city that could be anywhere in America — the indie cafe, the shopping scene," said art director Roya Partovi. "Unless you're from Seattle, you won't know it's Seattle." Unassuming as always. How very Seattle. ...
