When one 8 just isn't enough

Seven-seven-oh-seven (7-7-07) is so last year. Don't give me that look. Which means the next big thing in fashionable wedding dates is 8-8-08. Not only is it easy to remember for anniversaries — ahem, for men — but the number 8 is considered lucky in Chinese culture. Which makes it the perfect date for Rob Johnsen and Polly Cohen's nontraditional, Chinese-themed wedding on Bainbridge Island.

"I'm very superstitious and a bit of a gambler. I've always loved the number 8," says Johnsen, co-founder of the wedding planning Web site Mywedding.com. "The whole theme is going to be fortune and good luck."

Dinner will be served family-style, with dim sum and personalized chopsticks. Party favors will include mini Magic 8 Balls. As for the anniversary date, Johnsen says: "I'm actually the type of guy who wouldn't need a reminder." A fortuitous coupling? Signs point to yes. ...

PIRATE BOOTY! The Seattle Seafair Pirates make an unlikely cameo in the 2008 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, where they pose on a pirate ship with model Melissa Haro. (You may remember her from previous seasons of "Project Runway.") The pirates were in the right place at the right time, snapped up by SI during their annual appearance at Pirates Week in the Cayman Islands. "This is a lot of exposure for the pirates," said Mark "Keelhaul" Jensen, with apparently no pun intended. "We're hunks." ...

THE ROCKIN' GUITAR HERO nights at Hotel Monaco have become so popular that a tournament is in the works for Friday. Entry fee is $15 (to sign up, email monacoguitarhero@yahoo.com), and the grand prize is airfare for two and a stay at a fancy resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. Proceeds will benefit both a hotel employee who lost his home in a fire and the local chapter of the Red Cross. They should probably also throw some money at the poor schlubs who work in the lobby and have to listen to people butcher Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" a million times. Fire away! ...

WHO KNEW JOHN MCCAIN was the original McSomebody? The Republican presidential candidate reportedly was nicknamed "McNasty" (per Newsweek) in high school because of his rebellious nature. So if this whole presidential thing doesn't work out, maybe he has a future alongside McDreamy and McSteamy on a certain television drama set in Seattle. To paraphrase Janet Jackson: McNasty! McNasty boys. Don't mean a thing to me. ...

IT'S OSCAR NIGHT, which means gossiping about what people are wearing will be half the fun. Join us tonight at www.seattletimes.com/entertainment as fashion reporter Nicole Tsong and I go all Joan Rivers on the red carpet with a live chat starting at 4 p.m. And we're sticking around for the ceremony, too — all 15 hours of it. For this honor, we'd like to thank our editors, Kathy Griffin and Jesus. ...

CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS ROUNDUP: Marilyn Manson and girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood, who is now a brunette, ordering room service at Hotel Monaco ... Wyclef Jean and his band having a late-night dinner at El Gaucho — he drank 7-Up with his meal ... Rapper Saigon of "Entourage" fame performing at Neumos on Capital Hill. No word on whether Turtle made a cameo.
