Westlake Avenue to be closed for construction

Westlake Avenue will be closed between Olive Way and Stewart Street to build a pedestrian plaza at the current end of the South Lake Union streetcar.

Starting Thursday, Westlake Avenue will be closed between Olive Way and Stewart Street to build a pedestrian plaza at the current end of the South Lake Union streetcar.

Construction is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving. The Seattle Streetcar and buses on Fifth Avenue will remain in service during the work.

The work will be done in what the city calls McGraw Square, a historic landmark. It will include improved pedestrian connections to the retail core and Downtown Transit Tunnel, a second streetcar platform and shelter, covered bicycle parking and new landscaping.

The new McGraw Square will serve as a transportation hub at Westlake. For more information, go to www.seattle.gov/transportation/westlakehub_streetcarplaza.htm.
