More from Gossip's incredible "Music for Men" album - "Men in Love" (the next words are "with each other")

Posted by Andrew Matson

Excellent album cover. It's the drummer, Hannah Blilie. See her twin brother Jordan front his band Past Lives at Bumbershoot.

Here's "Men in Love" from "Music for Men."

It doesn't have the immediate appeal of album standounts "Four Letter Word" and "Love Long Distance" -- it's not new-Gossip. Not synthy, nearly guitar-less Gossip. It's old-school, back to basics, dance-punk Gossip. The band as we've known it. Or is it?

The bass line is a tip-off that new things are happening. Gossip used to be just guitar/vocals/drums. And then all that auxiliary percussion? Where's that coming from? Cowbells and Latin-sounding drums? Finally, the chorus hits and it's a heavy slab of disco, with bass and guitars combining into a single stream. OK: "Men in Love" is more innovative than it originally seems.

"Shame, shame, shame

Dance like there's nobody looking

Men in love: with each other."
