Video: "Irish Celebration" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
Posted by Andrew Matson
Capitol Hill rapper Macklemore is already having a big 2011 — he just sold out two nights at the Showbox, and added a third concert (02/25, 02/27, 03/05).
Also part of his rapidly unfolding Big Year are two sentimental gut punch music videos: "My Oh My," which is Macklemore and music director Ryan Lewis' tribute to recently passed-away Mariners announcer Dave Niehaus, and now "Irish Celebration," embedded below, from "The VS. EP" (2009).
"Irish Celebration" was directed by Stephan Gray (disclosure: I went to college with him) and has some pretty, Hipstamatic-esque photography in it. I like Macklemore pumping on a scooter down 1st Ave holding an Irish flag (above). What a ham. But what an image.
Rap is friendly to hams, and Macklemore's a natural, not to mention his kid-friendly indie-rock/rap crossover requires it*. Gray uses that hamminess for some some big moments — Mack preaching from on top of a bar, Mack rapping by torchlight — where our man looks exactly like the major mainstream star he could be.
Watching the video is a little like looking into the future, where Macklemore is nationally famous.
*I have worked in a classroom setting, and can attest that acting chops, especially overacting chops, come in handy.
