Gay youths committing suicide

Posted by Letters editor

Recent deaths make Dan Savage’s new project timely

Last month there were at least five gay youths who took their own lives as a result of homophobic bullying. Gay teens commit suicide at a much higher rate than most kids as a result of relentless harassment from their peers.

I find last month’s deaths especially upsetting because of the progress we in the gay community have made recently, and with national polls showing that we now have a majority of Americans in support of gay rights and marriage equality.

Another thing that upset me was The Times’ lack of coverage of Dan Savage’s new YouTube channel. Dan started the “It Gets Better Project” so that gay men and women who were bullied as kids can tell gay teens who are likely being bullied that it won’t always be like that. I’m surprised you didn’t even include it in local news, considering he lives in Seattle.
