Family gives thanks for Western State Hospital staff

Posted by Letters editor

Institutions that serve people with mental illnesses deserve praise

At Thanksgiving, there is time to reflect on the many gifts life has given us.

For our family, the greatest gift of this last year has been the people and the services offered to our son, Matt, at Western State Hospital. At a time when there were no good answers to the ups and downs of a schizophrenic young person, Western State Hospital provided stability and continuity of care for him. [“Cuts could close wards, send mentally ill to communities,” NWSunday, Nov. 13]

Our worries and stress were abated by caring, committed professionals who guided, supported and communicated with us through the entire process of admission, evaluation and treatment. Our fears of the system and the foreboding image of a state institution evaporated when the team of professionals reassured both our son and our family that there was hope for the future.

Their determination, professionalism and patience in the treatment process allowed our son to return to a life of purpose and productivity. Western State Hospital stands as a valuable resource in our state, reaching out to individuals and families with reassurance and expertise when it is needed. Our thanks to the staff of ward C3 do not seem adequate in expressing our gratitude. We are forever advocates for the mentally ill and the institutions that serve them.
