End of ride-free zone will leave poor stranded, panel told

Class discrimination

The choice to repeal the free-ride zone in the Seattle Area is a step in the wrong direction. [“End of free-ride zone to hurt the poor, panel told,” NWThursday, May 31.]

In the American climate today, there is a tendency to act like class doesn’t matter. While people have been able to accept the fact that race and gender matter and work toward making changes to decrease the discrimination in those areas, class is something that many organizations seem to readily avoid dealing with.

The King County Metro system seems to have acknowledged class and taken a step backward. Instead of implementing policies that will help the lower classes, they are taking policies that already favor people in the lowest class away. Furthermore, they are creating the facade that they are not actually doing so by implementing the free minibuses.

Despite the fact that human-services advocates have explained that this will not be sufficient to fill the gap the repeal of the free-ride zone will create, the Metro seems to believe that it is a good idea to move forward, with the plan of “saving money.” They should listen to the experts who say little to no money will actually be saved and a huge population of low-class, poverty-stricken Seattleites will suffer.
