Tending to derelict boats
Gerry O’Keefe was right in his guest commentary today [“The Deep Sea debacle: State needs to address threat of derelict boats,” Opinion, June 13]. We do need an efficient system for getting rid of derelict boats.
One thing he failed to mention is that the state had possession of the boat at one time and sold it to Rory Westmoreland on Craigslist! It was completely irresponsible for the state to sell it to someone, assuming it would be safely scrapped.
If we have a program where the state takes over ownership of a derelict boat (and we do need one), there ought to be guidelines set up and contracts written between the state and licensed, bonded salvage operators.
It is hard to see how the state acted responsibly in this situation. It needs to do better.
